Our Story

Carolyn, her husband BJ, and their two sons

We are happy you visited us here at Sugar Medical. Each and every purchase is sure to bring a smile to those living with diabetes.  Sugar Medical is based in Chesterfield, VA and was launched in 2009.  Every bag we design is durable and practical for daily life with diabetes. A top priority for us in our design process is STYLE.  We hope having a bag that you love encourages more frequent blood glucose testing, which will lead to better diabetes health for each customer. Taking care of yourself is important, and we want to create bags that makes the journey a bit easier.  Our attention to detail brings many great functional features like cell phone pockets, pockets for a Dexcom CGMs, removable wrist straps, and many interior pockets for extra supplies. We frequently hear from customers how much customers loving having a stylish bag that they can finally see across the room, in the bottom of their purse or backpack! It’s little things like that which make life with diabetes a bit easier. We design bags that people WANT to carry and LIKE to carry. Our growing line of bags allow people with diabetes to show a little personality, bring in some color, and make it fun!

Why our founder, Carolyn Jäger, launched Sugar Medical:

My story begins in 1985 when my 6-year-old sister was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.  Needles and blood testing machines became a common sight, along with a few tears from my mother and sister.  Much to my family’s surprise, 5 years later, I too was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 13. I was already a bit of a fashionista, so I can still remember what it felt like to carry all of my diabetic supplies to school every day in that ugly black nylon bag.  I hated carrying that bag, yet it became my constant companion going with me everywhere, every day. I felt like it branded me as being different. Certainly, not what a 13 year old wants!

Sensing my annoyance and desire for something with a little more style, my mother created a special bag for me.  It was pink with green turtle patches. The bag not only suited my sassy stylish side, but they made my new life with diabetes a little easier to cope with.

Through the years, I followed my mother’s lead and continued to make chic diabetic supply bags for myself.  Then after I had my first son, a close family friend suffered through some very serious complications from diabetes.  It changed me.  Immediately I saw how important good glucose was in controlling diabetes and in preventing complications.  I wanted to help others never go through what our family friend experienced.  My doctor explained to me that many people do not carry their supplies with them saying it was too hard to carry everything and they were embarrassed by the “medical” looking bag. Then it dawned on me,  I could not be the only diabetic in the world who wanted something better than the ugly, boring black bags that came with each glucose meter. I decided I could help encourage better glucose control by creating a line of bags that looked the opposite of “medical” and create a line with style and function. After a career in retail and as a buyer for a department store, I decided to take my idea to the next step.  In 2009, I launched Sugar Medical with the mission to create fashionable, yet functional bags for people with diabetes. I want to encourage more people with diabetes to carry their daily supplies with them every day without shame and encourage better glucose control.  It is time to bring style and quality into the lives of people living with diabetes. I hope you like what you see from Sugar Medical!

Stay happy and healthy!
